Why I can never respect "speedrunners". All this time, all this bs... Amounts to nothing... I fully understand the whole "no time spent enjoyed is time wasted", but this particular instance... Basically amounts to "Look how we are almost the tier of "Tool assisted" runs, but with out the tools!" level of even more worthlessness. The culmination of "you need to get some bytches on ya dik". But, I guess considering the "fandom" surrounding the "sonic" franchise, the local elementary schools would need to be put on high alert.

You seem to tie the observability of this Single Event Upset to its plausibility. This... is not how probability works. If we know that a bit was flipped (and this seems reasonable to believe), whether the change it induced was observable or not has no bearing on the theory that it was a cosmic ray. Moreover we know that cosmic rays permeate our world all the time -- you seem to be gesturing, you know, vaguely incredulously toward the notion that a cosmic ray traveled billions of light years with the sole mission of messing with people. But a lot of things are hit by cosmic rays all the time, and the reason we don't notice this all the time is because we have robust error correction for most cases where it matters. In fact, we *invented* error correction methods (at least, in the computer science sense) because of the hostility of the world toward sensitive electronic devices.

I'm really glad the community decided to implement the new timing method. It makes perfect sense, and when speedgames live and die by their playerbases, changing the meta to "only pause if it saves you time" is much more appealing (for runners and viewers) and hopefully keeps the community lively.

I think it was a mistake to default to 'in game time' when the in-game timers have an obvious built-in pause, not just for sonic but all games that have an exploitable internal timer.
I think is just a bug in the console.

Can I beat ocarina of time without pausing? No, hell no. The effort involved to do this is ridiculous. It's neat seeing how creative you have to get to do this, but this is insane.
If I were in charge of this, I'd just make two categories. IGT and RTA would just be separate categories.
I didn't realize there was so much debate over something as niche as speed running and how to record it. Wouldn't this change make it easier for people to cheat by pre recording and editing out when they paused, they could even just change the gamepad input to not show that they paused, would be easy to do that with a static overlay.
Im yet to see the problem. Why not count all pause buffers past 60 Frames per level? Either way for the game the pause time doesn't really count. so why change, and unlike Sonic 3 there aren't major glitches with them that completely invalidates its existance.

Sonic speedruns are my favorite.
That timer abuse with pausing is a perfect example of a bad decision that unfortunately looked well at the time it was made. Now it's quite clear that smth different should have been used instead (e.g. pausing the external timer during the score count, similar to how it's done in the modern games when you pause it during the loading screens.

I sorta see the merit of both timers. Like, RTA gifts people who take the time to train for those frame perfect actions. But Pause is sometimes just required, and Sonic actually has a negative for having excess in-game time (the Time Bonus). Because both of these are valid, and honestly speedrunning is about getting it done fast... I don't know. I think both should be applied somehow to balance things. Like maybe if you took the average of RTA and In-Game? So there is incentive to lower both as only lowering one of the two times gives less results than lowering both, but it also more heavily incentivizes lowering the higher time if only one.

Many games need this change on PC tbh. Where the main meta has become to exploit the load remover, essentially allowing you to pausebuffer the entire run like it was a tas. RE4 is a good example of this.

Only people who could vote, were those who had a run submitted of an affected category before the vote took place, and had also given their input in the discussion thread. Given there are less than 200 listed PBs in affected categories and some of those are duplicates from runners running multiple categories, 30 is a decent turnout for a game that sr.c. lists having 19 active runners, which includes IL-only runners who are unaffected. They even had a few people who haven't run the game in a long time come along to vote.

And have them largely duplicated? because the only thing that truly separates them when they are hyper-optimised is a single IGT time save where you pause buffer loading the boss, which wastes time RTA.
I think legal vanilla speed runs are most interesting to watch. I mean to me when i play sonic 2 i take pride in that i can beat emerald hill 1 in 19 or 20 seconds or so... At least on real harware, and i think just bouncing on those badniks and having that flow makes for a better run. I think there should at least be a better category for those who abide the rules of the level to go fast.
